Questions

Everything people ask before trying DynamicNotch.

Quick answers about compatibility, installation, app signing, customization, updates, and building from source.

Do I need a MacBook with a hardware notch?

Yes. DynamicNotch is designed around notched MacBook displays, so that hardware layout gives the intended placement, spacing, and motion.

Why does macOS warn me when I open the app?

The current DMG is unsigned, so macOS may block the first launch. Open it once from Applications, then use Open Anyway in Privacy & Security if the system asks.

What macOS version do I need?

The project currently targets macOS 14.6 or later. For source builds, the repo recommends Xcode 15+.

Can I build it from source instead of downloading the DMG?

Yes. The GitHub repository is open source, and the page already links to the clone command, project file, and release notes if you want to inspect or modify the app yourself.

Can I customize how DynamicNotch looks and behaves?

Yes. The app includes native settings for launch at login, display target, notch dimensions, stroke styling, and feature-level toggles so you can tune the experience to your setup.

What can actually appear inside the notch?

DynamicNotch can surface live activities, temporary alerts, media-related interactions, Apple Clock timers, download states, Bluetooth and Focus signals, Lock Screen events, plus a custom HUD for brightness, volume, and keyboard backlight.

Can temporary events interrupt content that is already visible?

Yes. The app is built around short-lived alerts and longer-lived content sharing the same surface, so temporary events can take focus and the previous activity can restore afterward. Recent releases also continued improving that restore behavior and the surrounding Settings controls.

Can I disable modules I do not use?

Yes. The settings redesign separates controls into dedicated sections such as Application, Media & Files, Connectivity, System, and Info, which makes it easier to keep only the parts of DynamicNotch you actually want enabled.

Is the custom HUD configurable too?

Yes. Recent releases expanded HUD customization with multiple layouts, animated level text, dynamic tinting, and deeper HUD-specific settings, so the hardware overlay can better match your setup and visual preference.

Where can I get an older version if I need one?

Use the Download page for the current and previous release, then open the full release history on GitHub if you want older builds such as the earlier 1.4.x, 1.3.x, 1.2.x, 1.1.x, or 1.0.x versions.
